SRT to plain text: before and after

This is real output. The sample below runs through the same code as the tool above. Cue numbers, timecodes and the italics tag are gone, the two wrapped lines become one paragraph, and & turns back into &.

Convert multiple SRT files to TXT

Select them all at once in the file picker. Every file gets its own TXT and its own download button. Nothing is merged, so captions from different videos stay apart.

VTT to text

Same tool, same steps. A .vtt file comes out as plain text with the WEBVTT header, cue settings and NOTE or STYLE blocks stripped. Keep timecodes works here too.

How to convert SRT to TXT

  1. Choose your .srt or .vtt file, or paste the subtitles into the box.
  2. Tick Keep timecodes if you want the times. Leave it off for text only.
  3. Click Copy text or Download .txt.

Need it in Word or Google Docs? Open the downloaded .txt or paste the copied text. Keep the original subtitle file if you still need captions on the video.

No subtitle file yet?

Transcribe the recording, then download SRT or VTT when it has valid timing (not on a locked preview). Free accounts include 60 lifetime minutes, for files up to 60 minutes and 100MB.

Want text with times straight from the recording? Get a timestamped transcript. Need more minutes? See pricing.

SRT to TXT questions

Can you convert SRT to TXT?

Yes. Choose the .srt file above or paste its contents, then click Download .txt. By default you get just the words: cue numbers, timecodes and tags are removed.

Can I convert SRT to text with timestamps?

Yes. Tick Keep timecodes and each paragraph keeps its start and end time on the line above it.

What's the difference between SRT and TXT?

An SRT file is text with a fixed structure: a cue number, a start --> end timecode, then the caption, repeated for every line on screen. Video players use that structure to time captions. A TXT file is only the words. Keep the SRT for playback and use the TXT to read, quote or edit.

How do I open an SRT file and read it as text?

Any text editor opens it, such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. You will see the numbers and timecodes mixed in with the words. To read only the words, convert it here.

How can I convert subtitles to text?

Get the subtitles as an SRT or VTT file, then load it into the converter above. Subtitles you downloaded from YouTube work the same way. The tool cannot fetch a YouTube link or pull captions out of a video.

Is my SRT file uploaded or stored?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser. The subtitle text is not uploaded to Transcriv, and the converter keeps no copy.

Is the SRT to text converter free?

Yes. It needs no account and uses no transcription minutes. Files must be UTF-8 and up to 5MB each.

Why does my SRT show strange characters or no text?

The converter reads files as UTF-8. Older subtitle files are often saved in another encoding, so accented letters turn into odd symbols. Open the file in a text editor, save it again with UTF-8 encoding, then load it again. If no text comes out at all, check that the file still has its timecode lines.

Can I convert ASS, SBV, SUB or ZIP files?

No. The tool reads only .srt and .vtt files. A ZIP is not unpacked either: select the subtitle files themselves, as many as you like, in the file picker.

Can I convert VTT to TXT?

Yes. Load the .vtt file the same way as an SRT and click Download .txt. The WEBVTT header, cue settings and NOTE or STYLE blocks are removed.

Is VTT the same as SRT?

Not quite. Both are timed caption files in plain text. VTT starts with a WEBVTT line, puts a period before the milliseconds instead of a comma, and can hold NOTE and STYLE blocks. This converter reads both.

Can I convert SRT or VTT to Word or PDF?

Not directly. Download the TXT or copy the text, then open it in Word or Google Docs and save it as DOCX or PDF from there.

Does it fix or translate subtitles?

No. You get the existing captions in file order, minus the formatting. Typos, translations and repeated lines are left as they are.

What if I have audio or video but no subtitle file?

Transcribe it with Audio to SRT or Video to SRT, then download the SRT or VTT. Transcription uses account minutes. Subtitle export needs valid timing segments and is not available for locked previews.
