How to convert audio to an SRT file
- Upload the recording above. MP3, WAV and M4A go in as they are.
- Wait for the transcript. Minutes are counted from the length of the audio.
- Open the Download menu and choose SRT subtitles. VTT sits next to it.
SRT greyed out? The transcript has no valid timing data. Locked previews cannot export subtitles either.
An SRT file generated from audio
This sample runs through the same export code as your download. The wording is a made-up podcast intro. The numbering, timecodes and layout are exactly what you get.
1 00:00:00,420 --> 00:00:04,180 Welcome back to the show. Today we're talking about recording at home. 2 00:00:04,180 --> 00:00:08,600 My guest has produced podcasts from a spare bedroom for six years. 3 00:00:09,040 --> 00:00:12,750 So let's start with the question everyone asks. Which microphone?
One cue per transcript segment, with no added text. In our test, TurboScribe Free put a promo line in the first cue.
MP3 to SRT, plus WAV and M4A
Upload whichever file you have. Converting an MP3 to WAV first adds size, not detail. OGG, OPUS, AAC, FLAC, AMR and AIFF are accepted too. What matters for a free upload is the 100MB limit, and that is where WAV catches people out:
| Format | Size per minute | Fits in 100MB |
|---|---|---|
| MP3, 128 kbps | about 1 MB | the full 60 minutes |
| M4A (AAC), 128 kbps | about 1 MB | the full 60 minutes |
| WAV, 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo | about 10.6 MB | about 9 minutes |
Constant bitrate, decimal MB. Free files are also capped at 60 minutes. A long WAV? Export it as MP3 or M4A and upload that.

Podcast, interview and voice recording to SRT
Podcast clips and audiograms
Transcribe the episode audio once, then load the SRT into the editor where you build the clip. See podcast transcription.
Interviews from a separate recorder
Clean audio often comes from a recorder while the camera films. Caption from that file. See interview transcription.
Voice memos
Save the memo as a file, usually M4A, then upload it. The SRT lets you play it back in a media player with the words on screen. See voice memo to text.
Captioning a video from its audio? Match the start
Cue times count from the first second of the audio file. Upload audio that starts exactly where the video starts, such as the audio exported from your final edit. If the audio starts 3 seconds before the video, every cue lands 3 seconds late, and you will have to shift the subtitles 3 seconds earlier in your editor. Before you publish, read the SRT: names, numbers and jargon are where mistakes show up.
Have the video file itself, or need the import steps for YouTube, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve? See video to SRT.

Why can't I download an SRT for my audio?
Why can't I download an SRT for my audio?
Your audio transcript has no usable timing, so there is nothing to build cues from. SRT and VTT stay greyed out, but TXT and the other text downloads still work. A locked preview also blocks SRT and VTT until you can open the full transcript.
