Rev Alternative for Recordings Longer Than Your Free Minutes

By Transcriv Team β€’ Updated

Pick Transcriv if you have a recorded file between 45 and 60 minutes, such as an interview, lecture, or podcast episode, or several recordings in a month that add up to more than 45 minutes, and want them transcribed for free. Its Free plan accepts one file up to 60 minutes and 100MB, within 60 lifetime minutes. Stay with Rev if one short file a month is enough, or if you need speaker labels, broadcast caption formats, or transcripts checked by a person. Rev Free renews 45 minutes every month, according to Rev, and Transcriv Free doesn't renew at all.

Rev Free handled a 29-minute file well: it was ready in about a minute and a half, with speakers and timestamps, and every export was free. A file longer than the minutes we had left was another story. Rev uploaded our 90-minute file and then refused to transcribe it, with no partial transcript and only an Upgrade button.

Prices and limits as of October 20, 2026. This page is about rev.com as a transcription service for your own files, not about working for Rev as a freelance transcriber.

Rev's monthly 45 minutes suit someone with one short file a month. But Rev won't transcribe a file longer than what's left, not even part of it, and one 29-minute interview left us 16 minutes for the rest of the month. A 50-minute lecture or a second interview doesn't fit, and the next step Rev offers is a paid plan built for legal and investigative teams.

Have a recording up to 60 minutes? Upload it to Transcriv Free. If it's over the limit, you'll find out before it uploads.

What happened to a 29-minute and a 90-minute file on Rev Free

Rev needs an account before it transcribes anything. Signed out, you only get a price quote. On a new free account in October 2026, the 29-minute file came back with speaker labels and timestamps and used 29 of the 45 monthly minutes.

Rev transcript editor near the end of the file, with "Speaker 2" at 28:13 and 28:39 and "Speaker 1" at 28:38 and 28:41, under a banner "Want it perfected? Real humans deliver 99%+ accurate transcripts, as fast as 2 hours."
Rev Free, October 2026: the 29-minute file came back with speakers and timestamps to the end.

The 90-minute file uploaded, and then Rev showed: "File uploaded, but can't be transcribed. Your file uploaded successfully, but the total duration of the file uploaded exceeds the available 16 minutes remaining in your plan." There was no partial transcript, and nothing was charged.

Rev message "File uploaded, but can't be transcribed" saying the file exceeds the available 16 minutes remaining in the plan, with an Upgrade button, next to the 01:30:00 file
Rev Free, October 2026: the 90-minute file uploaded but was refused with 16 minutes left.

Signed out, Rev had quoted AI transcription at $0.25 a minute, $22.50 for the 90-minute file. Inside the free account, the refused file's order options didn't include that. AI transcripts and AI captions were paid in AI minutes, and human transcripts, human captions, and translated subtitles were priced separately. A separate "Order AI transcription" card on the home screen still links to a per-file checkout, but the refusal itself only points to Upgrade.

Rev order options for the refused file: AI captions ("AI turns audio or video files into timed captions") and "AI transcripts" priced in "AI minutes", "Human captions" at "$1.99/min", and "Global subtitles" with "Price depends on the selected language"
Rev Free, October 2026: the refused file's AI options were paid in AI minutes, with no per-file price.

The free plans measure different things. Rev's 45 minutes come back every month, so a podcaster with one 30-minute episode a month could stay on Rev Free. Transcriv's 60 minutes are a one-time allowance, but you can spend all of them on one recording, or on several shorter ones in the same week. For a student with one 50-minute lecture, Transcriv Free covers it and Rev Free can't start it.

On paid plans, the gap runs both ways. Rev Essentials costs three times Transcriv Pro on monthly billing ($29.99 against $9.99) and is aimed at "solo practitioners and small firms". It also includes 5,000 minutes a month against Transcriv's 600. For a few long recordings a month, Transcriv Pro is cheaper. For more than 10 hours a month, or several seats, Rev Essentials includes far more minutes for the money.

Accuracy and exports

Rev quotes its AI accuracy as anything from "90%+" to "96%+", depending on the page, and human transcription as "99%+". We didn't measure accuracy.

Rev's help center lists AI exports as DOCX, PDF, TXT, SRT, and VTT, but the free account gave us 21 formats, including 13 caption formats and Avid Script Sync. The TXT had no branding. The DOCX carries "Transcript by Rev.com".

Rev "Download Transcript" dialog listing caption formats including SubRip (*.srt), WebVTT (*.vtt), Scenarist (*.scc), Timed Text (*.ttml), DFXP (*.dfxp), MacCaption (*.mcc) and EBU Subtitle (*.ebu.stl)
Rev Free, October 2026: 13 caption formats, all free to download.

Transcriv exports seven formats (TXT, DOCX, PDF, Markdown, SRT, VTT, JSON) with no branding line added.

Strengths and limitations

Rev strengths

  • A full editor on Free, including speaker renaming, search and replace, timestamp offset, and low-confidence highlighting.
  • AI Chat with timestamp citations, built-in AI templates, suggested clips, and a lecture summarizer. None of them used our free minutes.
  • Human transcription, paid per minute from $1.99/min, with discounts on annual paid plans.
  • Paid plans for legal and investigative work, with up to 10,000 AI minutes per user a month on Pro. Translation is a Pro feature.

Rev limitations

  • 45 minutes a month covers about one 30-minute interview.
  • Free is English only. Essentials adds Spanish, and Pro lists 37+ languages.
  • Team workspaces need a paid plan.

Transcriv strengths

  • One free file can be up to 60 minutes, longer than Rev Free's whole monthly allowance.
  • No account is needed to try it.
  • Markdown and JSON exports.
  • Pro accepts files up to 5 hours and 2GB.

Transcriv limitations

  • The 60 free minutes never renew. After you use them, Free is done.
  • No human transcription, translation, speaker labels, audio restoration, or batch uploads. You upload one file at a time.
  • Fewer caption formats: SRT and VTT only.
  • Pro includes 10 hours a month, and there's no yearly plan.
  • Without an account, the first two transcripts are shown in full. Later ones show a 75-character preview until you sign in.

Switching from Rev

  1. Check the recording's length and size: under 60 minutes and 100MB for Free, or under 5 hours and 2GB for Pro.
  2. Upload the original audio or video file. Transcriv doesn't import Rev transcripts, speaker names, or edits.
  3. Review names and quotes against the recording, then copy the text or download it in the format you need.

You can keep Rev for short files that fit your monthly minutes. The interview transcription and audio-to-text pages describe the Transcriv workflow.

Other Rev alternatives, by need

If neither tool fits, these are worth a look for specific jobs:

  • For subtitles, translation, or human-made transcripts, Happy Scribe has a subtitle editor and translates transcripts and subtitles. Our Happy Scribe alternative page shows what its free plan does with a 29-minute file.
  • For live meeting notes, Otter.ai joins Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams calls and transcribes them as they happen, and Notta says it records those calls too. See our Otter AI alternative and Notta alternative pages.
  • For many short files for free, TurboScribe Free takes 3 files a day without an account, each up to 30 minutes. Our TurboScribe alternative page shows what happened to a longer file.
  • For offline or private files, OpenAI's open-source Whisper model can run locally on your own computer, so audio never leaves it.

Frequently asked questions

What are some other companies similar to Rev?

For transcribing your own recordings, Happy Scribe also sells human-made transcripts and subtitles, TurboScribe transcribes 3 files a day for free (each up to 30 minutes) without an account, Otter.ai and Notta join live meetings, and Transcriv transcribes one uploaded file up to 60 minutes on its Free plan. If you are looking for transcription work rather than transcripts, this page doesn't cover that.

Is there a free alternative to Rev?

Rev has its own Free plan: 45 AI minutes a month, English only, and in our October 2026 test a file longer than the minutes left was refused. Transcriv Free accepts one file up to 60 minutes and 100MB, within 60 lifetime minutes that do not renew. TurboScribe Free allows 3 files a day, each up to 30 minutes. OpenAI's open-source Whisper model is free to run on your own computer.

Transcribe a recording that doesn't fit your Rev minutes

If it's up to 60 minutes and 100MB and you have enough Free minutes left, you can transcribe the whole file in one upload.
